Colégio dos Jesuítas do Funchal

The Colégio dos Jesuítas do Funchal is one of the most important historic buildings in the centre of Funchal, Madeira. Founded in 1570, it served as the local college of the Jesuit order until 1760. Over the centuries, the building was used for different purposes, including military, religious, and educational functions. Until the end of the 20th century, it was the largest built complex in the region and played a major role in the city’s urban and cultural history.

Today, the former college is classified as a Property of Regional Value. It is under the responsibility of the Universidade da Madeira and currently houses the Rectorate of the University of Madeira, as well as other institutional services. The building continues to be an active part of public and academic life while preserving its historical significance.
